Johnston Middle School has begun a hands-on robotics course to teach students science, math and engineering concepts in an exciting learning environment. The curriculum uses the latest generation of the LEGO Mindstorms NXT Robotics. From the basic kit of parts the students can create thousands of robot designs to sense and maneuver in the world around them. Motors, sensors and the programmable NXT microcomputer are used to teach students simple but powerful technology concepts.
Our first class of 15 students has spent the last 5 months preparing for the South Texas FIRST LEGO League Tournament. FIRST, a worldwide organization was founded to get kids excited about science and technology.
The FLL Tournament challenges the students in four areas: robot performance, project presentation, technical design and teamwork. Johnston sent two teams to the Tournament with very successful results! One of Johnston’s teams placed in the top 4 of their division. That team, consisting of Omar Ortega, assisted by Christopher Osterhaus brought home the Keep It Simple (KISS) Award for its simple, but effective robot design. Joseph Hurd-McGrew, Jacob Wiese and Christopher Osterhaus also did very well. These students are to be commended for their great work and outstanding results. We are Johnston Proud of our students!
