Standard Mode of Dress
2011-2012

Johnston Middle School will have a Standard Mode of Dress for the 2011 - 2012 school year. The JMS decision has been upheld by the SDMC. The dress code applies any time a student is on campus, including before and after school, and on field trips. The dress code policy starts once a student steps onto the school grounds until the student exits the school grounds. No additional items of clothing may be worn beyond what is explicitly stated herein.
 
 
Student ID
  • Student IDs must be on the student and visible at all times.  Information on the ID must be clearly visible and non-defaced.

Outerwear

  • Sweatshirts, jackets or sweaters:  Only JMS issued or solid white, gray, purple, or black may be worn during the day.
  • Other jackets may be worn to school and placed in student’s lockers during the school day. 
  • No vests or other outer wear permitted.

Outer shirt  -  All outer shirts must be purchased from the PTO

  • Monday – Thursday:  Students may only wear shirts purchased from the PTO (JMS polo or JMS T-shirt).
  • Friday:  Students may wear either a PTO purchased shirt or a JMS club shirt.  JMS club shirts are allowed on Fridays only.
  • Students may not wear the JMS PE shirt as an outer shirt.

Undershirt

  • Solid white, grey, purple or black; only visible at the neck;  may not extend below the bottom of the outer shirt.

Jeans

  • Solid blue or black denim jeans only, Fitted at the waist and extending to the ankle.
  • The following are not permitted:  (1) sagging pants; (2) ”skinny” (skin-tight) jeans; (3) leggings, capris or shorts; (4) holes or other designs; (5) “Dickies” or khakis;  (6) no frayed jeans.

Skirts

  • Solid blue or black denim skirts, worn to the knee.  Slits may not be more than 2” deep; measured from the hem.

Shoes

  • Closed toe, closed heel only. 
  • No house shoes permitted.
  • No toe sox/shoes allowed

Hair

  • Hair color must be of a naturally occurring color. 
  • Any haircut deemed disruptive by a teacher or administrator will not be allowed.

Other

  • Bags and backpacks:  Should remain in the locker throughout the school day.  This includes, but is not limited to, purses, totes and any other receptacle the administrator deems as a bag/backpack.
  • Belts must be worn in belt loops.
  • No extra accessories permitted or inside the building at any time including, but not limited to headware such as hats, sunglasses, du-rags, caps or bandanas. Hoods may not be worn during the school day. 
  • No visible tattoos or piercing (lip, tongue, nose, eye brow - ear piercing allowed).
 
Note:  This dress code will be enforced at school and at all school functions unless notified by the school; i.e. field trip permission form, notice of special event, or any notice on the monthly Johnston Update/Calendar.

NO electronic devices or cell phones may be used or be visible during the school day. This includes text messaging.  If inappropriately used or visible during the school day, cell phones and other electronic devices will be confiscated and turned in to the student’s House Dean. A $15 fee assessed.  When cell phones are confiscated, they are only returned to a parent after a 24-hour waiting period and the $15 cash (no checks) fee is paid.
