As a member of the Johnston Band department you will become a member of one the most accomplished band programs not only in the Houston Independent School District, but in the State of Texas as well! The Johnston band holds the distinction of winning the first UIL "Sweepstakes" Rating in the Houston Independent School District for band in recent history (1999), doing so twice earning perfect scores of straight I's, but also having done so more than any other HISD school with an unprecedented 6 "UIL Sweepstakes" Honors! In fact, in the last seven years, the Johnston Symphonic Band has earned either a Superior or Excellent rating in UIL band concert performance, sight-reading or both 7 times. Also, annually, Johnston band students are seated among the top positions and total number of chairs earned in Region or All City band competitions vs. other HISD schools. Finally, at Johnston you will be surrounded by motivated students who will challenge you to become more proficient on your instrument while participating in ensembles learning, performing and creating meaningful music. If you're willing to practice, study and work hard, you will certainly flourish under the tutelage and guidance of Mr. Craig Green, Director of Bands and staff.
The band department class offerings consist of the Symphonic, Honor, and Beginning bands and ensemble classes such as Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion. We also offer Mariachi studies, in both Beginning and Advanced levels. The Johnston Jazz Ensemble is well known throughout the city as well as the nation and is recognized for having trained more students attending HSPVA in Jazz than any other single M.S. Additionally, it has served as the catalyst for many leading Jazz recording artist/touring performers and writers in America today!
We invite you to become a part of this dynamic organization and unmatched heritage! Come audition and join us and begin your role in adding to our legacy.
