Help Solve the JMS Summer Mystery!
Johnston Middle School Summer Reading Program 2008

This summer students entering 7th and 8th grade will participate in a required school-wide summer reading program. The purpose of summer reading is to provide you with a fun and interesting way to build your reading skills while you are on break from school.
- 7th and 8th graders will receive a copy of the summer reading novel and a book notes page to complete. This is a required assignment. (GT classes will receive an alternate assignment)
- Incoming 7th graders will read Wolf Rider by Avi. The novel tells the story of a boy who tries to stop a crime, despite the fact that no one will listen to him.
- Incoming 8th graders will read Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix. In this book, Bethany has to figure out the secret her parents are hiding from her, which has caused her perfect life to be completely disrupted.
Your Assignment:
- Complete the book notes page while you read the book. (Due the first week of school.)
- A test on your summer reading book will be given in your Language Arts classes. Your test grade will be the first major grade of the year.
- You can also check the JMS web page in June for information about summer reading.

Extra Credit:
Share your thoughts and ideas about the book with others and get extra points!
- Interview someone else who has read your book. If you let someone borrow your copy, just make sure to get it back! (You will be asked to return your book to school in Sept.)
- You may interview a classmate, friend, family member, teacher, administrator or other school staff member who has read the book.
- Your interview can be presented on paper, audio or video. Be creative!
- Ask 10 questions during the interview. Turn in the questions and the answers. These questions should create a discussion about the readers’ thoughts and ideas about the book. For example, “How do you feel about the ending of the book? Why do you feel that way?”
